The Different Demolition Methods For Buildings And Structures

Demolition is NOT a one-size-fits-all operation. There are serious differences to consider before deciding which method of demolition to perform. Each building and structure has its own structural detail, ground conditions, and the safety of neighbors and local activities to consider. The demolition methods must depend also on post demolition needs such as removal of debris including hazardous materials. Let’s take a closer look at the different methods of demolition.

TOTAL DEMOLITION

A total demolition is the taking down of a complete structure. There are a variety of demolition methods that can be used.

Implosion - This method weakens the structural support so that the building collapses on itself inside a controlled perimeter.

Chemical - Using concrete demolition agents which have no sound and use no explosives, a demolition crew can safely bring down a large building.

Controlled - A demolition method that’s safe and guided. It is used on bridges, tall buildings, and chimney stacks. Demolition crews use diamond drilling and hydraulic concrete crunching to demolish the structure.

Mechanical - This method uses specialty equipment like hydraulic excavators, cranes, and wrecking balls to bring down a structure.

SELECTIVE DEMOLITION

This method is used when only specific sections of a building or structure are being removed. Oftentimes a section is being preserved.

INTERIOR DEMOLITION

This method is the removal of certain interior components of a building or structure. It can include the removal of walls, plumbing, ceilings, etc.

STRIP OUT DEMOLITION

This method is for careful dismantling of a building to preserve certain remnants for reuse.
